Talking with Others

Talking with family and friends

Just because hidradenitis suppurativa isn't always visible to others, doesn't mean it's easy to talk about. Your family and friends may not know how to bring the subject of hidradenitis suppurativa up, or may not know how to support you.

It Takes a Team

A dermatologist discusses why it’s a good idea to turn to family members for support.

Be Prepared with the Facts

Your family and friends will have many questions about hidradenitis suppurativa. But the more you know the facts about hidradenitis suppurativa, the better you can help explain it to others.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Intimacy

Real intimacy starts with open and honest communication. As with your other relationships, be sure you have access to the facts when you discuss your hidradenitis suppurative with an intimate partner. Assure him or her that hidradenitis suppurativa is not contagious. It helps if you can let a partner know that you are comfortable with yourself and that hidradenitis suppurativa is only one part of who you are.

Be sure to talk with your doctor about your feelings and let him or her know any concerns or questions you might have.
